Elkins Post 29 topples Fairmont Post 17
July 19, 2019

From Elkins Intermountain Newspaper

ELKINS — Brett Smith’s strong showing on both the mound and at the plate helped power Elkins to a 6-2 win over Fairmont Thursday at Robin Harvey Memorial Field.

Smith improved his pitching mark to 3-1 on the season after limiting Post 17 to just two runs on a mere three hits.

He struck out seven batters and fueled Post 29’s four-run first inning with a two-run single. Remington Stanley and David Freeman added an RBI each in the opening set as Elkins took control early.

Post 29 (20-14) pushed the deficit to 5-0 in the third inning when Smith, who finished 3 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs scored, singled and later scored on a Freeman base hit to left field.

After Fairmont cut the lead to 5-2 on a Chance Rundle two-run single in the fourth, Elkins capped off the scoring in the bottom half of the inning when Chuckie New doubled and later scored on an error.

“I think the key to the game was jumping out to that early lead in the first inning,” Elkins manager Chris George said. “I feel that Brett (Smith) really used that to his advantage out on the mound and got stronger as the game went along. We were a little short-handed tonight and missing some kids, but it didn’t affect us because we had some reserves step up and perform very well. We also had several guys playing out of position, but you wouldn’t have known it because of the way they played. It was a total team effort and everyone contributed.”

Garrett Wilkerson suffered the loss for Post 17 in four innings pitched. He allowed five runs on seven hits, struck out three and walked one.

Post 29 travels to Keyser at 5 p.m. today to face Romney at Potomac State College.
