ELKINS — Matthew Gainer twirled a five-inning one-hitter and Elkins’ offense pounded out 13 hits en route to a 10-0 victory over Buckhannon Tuesday in Area 5 American Legion action at Robin Harvey Memorial Field.
Post 29 (12-12, 4-1) wasted little time getting started in the contest as they crossed five runs in the opening inning. Gainer and Cory Reed both collected two-run singles in the frame, while Gage Bibey has a run-producing double.
Elkins tacked on three more runs in the second inning to go in front 8-0. Read Schumacher had a run-scoring triple in the inning, while Bibey tallied an RBI double.
Post 29 ended the scoring with two more runs in the third inning as Schumacher plated another run with his second triple of the game, and Gainer knocked home a run with a sacrifice fly.
Schumacher and Bibey led the Elkins hit parade with three hits and two RBIs each. Reed, Gainer and Nathan Cooper followed with two hits apiece.
“Our offense hit the ball better tonight than they have all season,” Elkins manager Chris George. “We had great at-bats from everybody and we did a good job of coming out and jumping on them (Buckhannon) early.”
Gainer struck out eight batters and walked just one in earning the win. Alex Seech had the lone hit for Post 7.
“Matthew (Gainer) pitched a good game,” George said. “He had good command of his pitches and his fastball had a lot of life on it.”
Wes Rosencrance suffered the loss for Buckhannon in 1/3 inning of work. He gave up five runs on three hits.
Elkins will remain home for a 6:30 p.m. contest against Kingwood today before taking two days off.
