HICO — Read Schumacher had four hits — including two home runs — as Elkins rolled to a 9-1 win over Summersville Sunday in Area 5 American Legion baseball action at Midland Trail High School.
Schumacher hit a solo homer in the first inning and a two-run shot in the third to give Post 29 (11-12, 3-1 Area 5) all the runs it would need in the contest. Post 131 cut the deficit to 3-1 in the home half of the third, but Elkins iced the victory with two more runs in the sixth inning and four in the seventh. Schumacher finished the contest 4 for 4 with three runs scored and three RBIs.
“Read had a big day at the plate for us,” Elkins manager Chris George said. “He’s really hit the ball hard all season for us, and today he found a lot of grass and put two over the fence.”
As strong as Schumacher was at the plate, teammate Will Knight was just as dominant on the mound. Knight (2-1) picked up the win in a complete-game effort. He allowed just three hits, walked one batter and struck out a season-high 12 Summersville batters.
“Will really pitched a great game,” George said. “He stayed ahead with his fastball all day and had great velocity on his pitches.”
Remington Stanley had two hits and drove in a run for Post 29, while Brett Smith and Knight had one hit and one RBI each.
Cy Persinger gave up five runs on seven hits to take the loss for Post 131. He struck out seven batters and walked three. Colin Dempsey had two hits to lead Summersville at the dish.
Sunday’s contest concluded a four-game weekend road trip as Elkins split a pair of games on Saturday. Post 29 suffered a 12-2 loss at the hands of South Charleston on Saturday, while earning a forfeit win over Charleston Post 20 later in the afternoon.
Elkins will entertain Buckhannon at 7 p.m. Tuesday for a key Area 5 contest at Robin Harvey Memorial Field.
