June 17, 2019

From the Elkins Inter-Mountain newspaper

Elkins - ELKINS — Despite most of the Hillbilly Hardball Classic Tournament being washed out by thunderstorms on Thursday, the weather enabled games to be played all day on Friday and Saturday, along with a single game on Sunday.

With no championship round played due to Thursday’s weather issues, the tourney concluded with Latrobe (Pa.) defeating Moundsville, 11-1, on Sunday morning at Robin Harvey Memorial Field.

Five squads –Morgantown (3-0), South Charleston (5-0), Florida Gulf Development (4-0-1), Florida Gulf Coast Green (4-0) and Marietta (Ohio) (5-0) all finished the tournament undefeated, while Beckley wrapped up play with a 4-1 mark.

“I want to thank all of our field crews for the hard work they put in each and every day of the tournament,” Elkins manager and tourney director Chris George said. “We couldn’t have had any of the games without their hard work, especially on Thursday when it rained most of the day. I also want to thank the Randolph County Commission, Pizza Hut and all of our other sponsors.”

Host team Elkins split a pair of games in action on Saturday. Post 29 fell to Morgantown 7-1 in its first contest, but rebounded with a 14-3 win over Piqua (Ohio) in the nightcap.

“It was nice to get a win to close out the tournament,” George said. “We played well at times and bad at times, but we’re getting better each day and starting to come together.”
