MORGANTOWN — The Elkins American Legion baseball team split a pair of games on Sunday at Mylan Park to close out play in the WAJR Wooden Bat Classic.
Post 29 (3-4) dropped a 7-3 decision at the hands of Romney in the opener, but bounced back for a 9-2 win over Smithfield Fairchance (Pa.) in the second contest.
Trey Bryson pitched 5 1/3 innings of six-hit baseball and Justin Stone hit a two-run homer to lift Romney in Game 1.
Brett Smith suffered the loss for Elkins in five innings of work. He scattered six hits, struck out two and walked three batters.
Matthew Gainer and Will Knight had two hits each for Post 29 in the loss.
Read Schumacher twirled a complete-game six-hitter to lead Elkins to the win in the nightcap. Schumacher (2-0) allowed no earned runs, fanned three and walked two. He helped his own cause at the plate with two hits and three runs scored.
Dustyn Primavero knocked in a pair of runs for Post 29, while Gainer finished with two hits. Knight and Gage Bibey drove in a run each on one hit.
Tristen Robinson took the loss for Smithfield Fairchance in four innings of work. He gave up eight runs on nine hits.
Elkins dropped a pair of games on Saturday, falling 9-5 to Uniontown (Pa.) and 12-0 to Cumberland (Md.).
“We started the tourney off good by dropping a close game to Morgantown on Friday, but had a letdown in both contests on Saturday,” said Elkins Manager Chris George. “I was happy we bounced back with a couple well played games on Sunday, though. We had a chance to win the Romney game, and Read (Schumacher) pitched an excellent game to close out the tourney and end it on a high note.”
Elkins will return to action when it faces Latrobe (Pa.) in opening round action of the Pizza Hut Hillbilly Hardball Classic. That matchup is scheduled for 9:30 p.m. on Thursday at Robin Harvey Memorial Field.
The Classic begins on Thursday morning.
