June 07, 2019

From the Intermountain newspaper:

LOST CREEK — A three-run eighth inning lifted Elkins to an 8-5 win over Clarksburg Thursday in American Legion baseball action at South Harrison High School.

Post 29, which improved to 2-0 with the win, trailed 3-2 entering its last at-bat in the seventh inning. With one out in the frame, Alex Wilson was hit by a pitch and Read Schumacher followed with a double to put runners on second and third base. One out later, Matthew Gainer ripped double to left-center field to score two runs and give Elkins a 4-3 lead. Gainer then scampered in for Post 29’s fifth run when Will Knight singled to center.

Post 13 battled back in the home half the inning to tie the game at 5-5 before Elkins rallied for three runs in the eighth. Cory Reed reached on an error to lead off the inning and two outs later, David Freeman reached on a fielder’s choice. Schumacher then plated two runs with a single and scored on a Nathan Cooper base hit.

“The kids battled all night and really fought for the win,” said Elkins manager Chris George. “It was a total team win and everyone contributed. For the second straight game, we had some big two outs hits and all of our pitchers threw really well.”

Remington Stanley notched the win for Post 29 in one inning of relief work. He allowed two hits, walked one and struck out one. Gage Bibey held the hosts hitless in the eighth inning to earn his second straight save. He struck out two batters. Knight got the start for Elkins and allowed just one hit in 4 2/3 innings on the hill. Brett Smith pitched a scoreless 1 2/3 innings for the visitors.

Schumacher led Post 29 at the dish with two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored. Gainer drove in two runs, while Cooper and Bibey knocked in one apiece.

Pat Bart suffered the loss for Clarksburg in 1 2/3 innings pitched. He gave up three earned runs on four hits. Bart helped his own cause at the plate with two hits and one RBI.
