From the Elkins Intermountain newspaper:
KINGWOOD — The Elkins American Legion baseball team opened the 2019 season with a 9-4 victory over Kingwood Thursday at Preston High School.
Post 29 (1-0) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the contest but saw the advantage disappear in the bottom of the fourth inning when Post 56 rallied to knot the contest up at 4-4.
Elkins responded with a run in the fifth inning to go in front 5-4 as Gage Bibey doubled with two outs and came around to score on another two-bagger from Cory Reed.
Post 29 sealed the win in top-half of the seventh inning by crossing four base runners. Matthew Gainer got the inning started when he tripled and scored on a wild pitch. Remington Stanley added a two-run single later in the inning and David Freeman chipped in with an RBI single.
Read Schumacher notched the win for Elkins in four innings pitched. He scattered five hits, struck out seven and walked two batters. Bibey earned the save in three innings of work. Bibey didn’t surrender a hit and struck out three while walking none.
“For the first game of the season on the road, I was very happy with the way we played,” said Elkins manager Chris George. “Overall we played very well and I was happy with the way we responded after they (Kingwood) came back and tied the game in the fourth inning. We had some timely two-out hits in the fifth inning that were key.”
Schumacher, Gainer, Bibey, Stanley, Freeman and Nathan Cooper all finished with two hits each for Post 29, which had 13 hits.
Tucker Livengood suffered the loss for Post 56 (0-2) in three innings pitched. He allowed four earned runs, walked two and struck out two.
Elkins will travel to South Harrison High School to battle Clarksburg Post 13 at 7 p.m. Thursday.
