Elkins Post 29 opens up postseason play with win over Buckhannon Post 7
July 27, 2018

From Elkins Intermountain Newspaper:

PHILIPPI?– Matthew Gainer allowed just five hits over six innings as Elkins Post 29 took the driver’s seat in the American Legion Area 5 tourney with an 11-1 win over Buckhannon Thursday night at Philip Barbour High School.

Post 29, now 21-16-2 on the season, will face the winner of today’s 5 p.m. elimination contest between Buckhannon and Jane Lew at approximately 7:30 p.m. in today’s second game.

Gainer, a left-hander, struck out eight, walked two and hit one batter in the contest, which ended in the bottom of the sixth inning due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Brett Smith supplied the walk-off win with a two-run single that plated Blake Loftis and Read Schumacher.

Elkins only had six hits in the game but took advantage of 12 free passes issued by Buckhannon pitchers.

The game was scoreless until Post 29 scored four runs in the third inning off Post 7 starter Zach White as Luke Petrice doubled in Smith, Ben Huffman drew a bases-loaded walk, Gainer trotted home an error and Loftis added an RBI groundout.

Elkins made it 6-0 an inning later on Gainer’s RBI groundout and a bases-loaded walk to Kyle Riggleman.

Buckhannon plated its lone run in the fifth when Drew Heatherly singled in Taylor Whitehair.

Heatherly went 2 for 2 on the night.

Post 29 then blew the game open in what would be the final two innings, scoring twice in the bottom of the fifth and three more times in the sixth.

Luke Swecker and Petrice raced home on a throwing error to account for the fifth-inning scores, while Luke Swecker drew an RBI walk in front of Smith’s game-ending single.

White took the loss in 4 1/3 innings. He gave up six runs on five hits, striking out one and walking six.

Wes Rosencrance, Heatherly and Whitehair finished in relief.

In Thursday’s first game, Buckhannon scored an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth inning to defeat Jane Lew by an 8-7 score.

With the game tied at 7-7, Nick Calef-Boring led off the sixth by drawing a walk and later scoring on an error.

Calef-Boring had a three-run double in the second to give Post 7 a 5-2 lead.

Post 166 answered with three runs in the third to tie the game at 5-5.

Run-producing singles from Calef-Boring and Whitehair then allowed Buckhannon to regain the lead in the fourth.

Jane Lew tacked on single runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings to draw even.

Calef-Boring had a pair of hits and four RBIs to lead Buckhannon at the plate, while Logan Bailey had two hits, including a double, reached base four times and scored three runs.

Luke White had a two-run homer in the first for Post 166 and finished with three hits.
