Elkins Post 29 American Legion Baseball

Kingwood hands Elkins Pot 29 a disappointing loss
July 11, 2018

From Elkins Intermountain Newspaper

ELKINS?– With the start of posteason play quickly approaching, Elkins Post 29 manager Chris George is hoping his squad can become more consistent with its play on the diamond.

“The time to start playing better is now,” George said after Tuesday’s 6-4 setback to Kingwood Post 56 at Robin Harvey Memorial Field. “We had a pretty good weekend by defeating Morgantown and Parkersburg, then we come out tonight and don’t play well at all.

“The inconsistent play has really hurt us all season.”

Post 29 got off to a good start against Kingwood in Tuesday’s contest, erasing a 1-0 deficit in the home-half of the first inning when Luke Petrice singled in Ben McDonald and Brett Smith scored on Matthew Gainer’s single.

Post 56 answered in the second, however, when Andrew Kerzak cracked a two-run double to put the visitors ahead for good.

Kingwood extended the lead to 5-2 in the fourth on Ethan Haskiell’s RBI groundout and a run-producing single from winning pitcher Corey Pyles.

In the fifth, Seth McCroskey’s RBI single made it 6-2.

Kyle Riggleman added a two-run single in the sixth for Post 29.

Pyles went all seven innings to earn the win. He allowed four runs (two earned) on seven hits, fanning three and walking three.

Riggleman took the loss in four innings of work, giving up five runs on 10 hits and striking out one.

Luke Swecker was solid in relief, allowing just one unearned run on one hit in three innings, He struck out two and walked one.

Kerzak, a Morgantown High School product, was 3 for 4 to lead Kingwood at the plate.

McDonald and Gainer had two hits apiece for Elkins.

Post 29 is now 15-12-2 on the season and will remain home at 6:30 p.m. today to face Jane Lew for an Area 5 contest.
