Elkins Post 29 American Legion Baseball

Brett Smith pitches Elkins past Bridgeport, 5-0
July 05, 2018

From the Elkins Intermountain Newspaper:

ELKINS — Brett Smith allowed just two hits over six innings to help Elkins Post 29 claim a 5-0 win over Bridgeport Thursday night at Robin Harvey Memorial Field.

Smith, a rising senior at Tygarts Valley, struck out five and walked three.

Kyle Riggleman worked a scoreless seventh inning, fanning one.

“Brett pitched a terrific game against a very good Bridgeport team,” Elkins manager Chris George said. “He had all three of his pitches working and he set them up well.”

Smith helped his cause in the third inning when he singled home Luke Petrice and Matthew Gainer added a triple to plate courtesy runner Read Schumacher, who was seeing his first action since being injured early in the season.

Elkins tacked on three more runs in the fifth when Petrice drew a walk and Smith doubled in front of Justin Fike’s two-bagger. Schumacher made it 5-0 when he scored on a passed ball.

“We got some timely hits tonight,”?George said. “We still left too many men (nine) on base, but we’re starting to do a better job of getting runners home.

“When you can defeat a team like Bridgeport, and hold them to no runs and just two hits, it’s a very good victory and one we’ll take.”

Former Lincoln multi-sport standout Kobie Carpenter took the loss for Post 68 in 2 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on five hits, striking out one and walking two.

Sam Romano, Tyler Pitzer, who got the final out in Bridgeport’s fifth straight Class AA state title victory this past spring, and Tim Via also saw time on the mound.

Romano allowed three runs on two hits in 1 1/3 innings, while Pitzer and Via worked a scoreless inning apiece.

Petrice and Fike each had two hits for Elkins, which is now 13-10-2 on the season and will remain home at 7 p.m. today to battle Morgantown Post 2.
