From the Elkins Intermountain newspaper:
GLENVILLE — Matthew Gainer tossed a no-hitter Monday to give Elkins Post 29 a 12-0 victory over Braxton County Post 33 at the Sue Morris Sports Complex in Glenville, in Elkins’ opening game of the season.
“The guys had good at-bats and good approaches at the plate,” Post 29 skipper Chris George said. “With the first game, you always want to get those first game jitters out of the way. I thought the kids played well. They played good defense and had timely hitting. They went out there and got the job done in an Area 5 game.”
In 5 innings, Gainer gave up zero runs, zero hits and 1 walk, and struck out 10 batters. Gainer also helped his own cause at the plate, going 1 for 4 with an RBI.
“Matt Gainer pitched a great game,” George said. “He mixed his pitches well. He stayed ahead of the count. We did what we needed to do to take care of business in an Area 5 game. Now we’ve got to move forward.”
Offensively, Read Schumacher set the pace for Post 29. He finished the day 3 for 3 with a double, 2 RBIs and a run scored. Other top performers for Elkins included: Brett Smith, 2 for 3 with 1 run and 4 RBIs; Justin Fike, 2 for 4 with 2 runs and 1 RBI; Kyle Riggleman, 2 for 2 with 3 runs and 1 RBI; and Shane Liller, 1 for 3 with 1 run and 1 RBI.
Cody Dobbins was cited with the loss for Braxton County. Over the course of 3 innings, he surrendered 7 runs on 8 hits while striking out 1 and walking 1.
Post 29 (1-0, 1-0 Area 5) is set to return to action today, when the team travels to Preston County Post 56. Game time is set for 6 p.m. at Preston County High School.
