Elkins Post 29 American Legion Baseball

Elkins opens up State Tournament play with a win over Bridgeport Post 68
July 27, 2017

BRIDGEPORT — Justin Fike smashed an RBI single in the eighth inning Wednesday to help Elkins Post 29 take down Bridgeport Post 68, 6-4, in the opening round of the American Legion State Tournament in Bridgeport.

Elkins (27-15) will now face Wheeling Post 1 (23-12) at 7 p.m. today in the winner’s bracket.

Prior to the game, South Charleston Post 94 (26-10) will play Romney Post 91 (22-11) at noon and Morgantown Post 2 (25-11-1) will take on Bridgeport Post 68 at 3:30 p.m.

“The kids never quit,” Post 29 manager Chris George said. “They battled back late in the game. Adam Riggleman did not have good command of his pitches tonight, but he was able to battle through five innings before the pitch count got him. Then, Read Schumacher came in and pitched wonderful. He gave us four innings of great relief. He really threw well. He had command of all three of his pitches.

“We started getting timely hits in the seventh inning. We were able to jump on them late and ride the momentum to the win.”
