ELKINS — Luke Petrice crushed a 2-run homer in the first inning Tuesday to help Elkins Post 29 defeat Fairmont Post 17, 10-0, in seven innings of American Legion Baseball action.
“We challenged the guys going into the game,” Post 29 manager Chris George said. “This is the most important week of the regular season, coming up, which is the last week of the regular season. We need to finish strong. That means focus from start to finish, which is what they did.
“Ben Huffman pitched his best game of the summer. All three of his pitches were working well. We had some timely hits and we played well throughout the entire game. It was a good start to an important week.”
Huffman (4-0) earned the victory on the mound for Elkins. He went the distance, giving up no runs on 7 hits while walking 3 batters and striking out 4 others.
Petrice set the pace at the plate for Post 29. He went 2 for 4 with a home run, 2 runs scored and 3 RBIs.
Caleb Riggleman went 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored, while Sam Ross went 1 for 4 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs.
Other top performers included: Cole Harlan, 2 for 3 with 1 run; Justin Fike, 2 for 3 with 1 run; and Brett Smith, 1 for 4 with an RBI.
Garrett Wilkerson recorded the loss for Fairmont. He went 6 1/3 innings, scattering 10 runs on 9 hits and striking out 3 batters.
Elkins jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning after Petrice’s 2-run shot. Elkins added another run in the fourth inning and pushed 5 more runs across the plate in the bottom of the seventh to take the 10-run mercy rule victory.
Elkins (19-14, 5-1 Area 5) returns to action today at Robin Harvey Memorial Field to host Buckhannon Post 7. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
