Elkins Post 29 downs Romney Post 91 on the road
June 13, 2017

From the Elkins Intermountain

ROMNEY — Rece Wamsley whiffed 6 batters Monday to help Elkins Post 29 blank Romney Post 91, 6-0, in American Legion baseball action.

“It was our best win of the season so far,” Post 29 skipper Chris George said. “Romney is a very good team. Rece Wamsley, after the first few innings, really started to settle down and got stronger as the game went on. He pitched seven very good innings of baseball. His breaking ball was working well. He had good command of his slider. Overall, he got stronger as the game went on.

“Defensively, Brett Smith played really good at shortstop. He made a couple nice plays. We only had one error — the defense again played great. And offensively, against some good pitching, we hung in there. We got some timely hits and we manufactured a couple of runs in the ninth inning on first and third plays and forced a couple of balks. It was a very good effort against a very good team on the road,” he added.

Wamsley (1-0) earned the victory on the mound. He went 7 innings, giving up 3 hits and 4 walks while striking out 6 batters.

Ben Huffman took over in the eighth inning and gave up 1 hit and 2 walks. Adam Riggleman closed out the contest in the ninth inning. He gave up 1 hit and 1 walk, while striking out 1 batter.

Brett Smith set the pace at the plate for Elkins. He finished the game 3 for 4 with a run scored. Other top performers for Post 29 included: Ben McDonald, 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored; Sam Ross, 2 for 5 with 1 run scored; Cole Harlan, 1 for 3 with an RBI; and Luke Petrice, 1 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored.

John Ackerman recorded the loss for Romney. He went 4 1/3 innings, scattering 3 runs on 6 hits.

During the game, Elkins scored 2 runs in the second inning, 1 run in the fifth and 3 runs in the top of the ninth. The Elkins defense committed 1 error and held Post 91 scoreless through 9 innings.

Post 29 (7-1, 2-0 Area 5) is set to travel to travel to Preston County Post 56 today. Game time is set for 6 p.m. at Preston County High School in Kingwood.
