McHENRY, Md. — Blake Loftis and Justin Fike drove in 3 runs each Tuesday to help Elkins Post 29 defeat Garrett County, Maryland, Post 214/71, 16-8, at Garrett Community College.
“We really hit the ball well,” Post 29 coach Chris George said. “That’s a good Garrett County team. We also did a good job of manufacturing runs early in the game with a couple of sacrifice flys. As the game went on, we just kept hitting. Defensively, there were a couple lapses. Pitching-wise, Read (Schumacher) pitched a heck of a game. He pitched well for his first start. It was a good win on the road. We’re really playing well.”
Read Schumacher earned the victory on the mound. He tossed 6 innings, giving up 1 earned run on 3 hits. He struck out 1 batter and walked 4. In relief, Michael Gherman threw 1/3 of an inning, surrendering 2 runs on 2 hits. Kyle Riggleman then closed out the contest, working 2 2/3 innings and giving up 3 unearned runs on 4 hits. He struck out 2 batters and walked 2 batters.
Post 29 collected 21 hits in the contest. Cole Harlan set the pace at the plate, going 3 for 5 with 3 runs scored and 1 RBI. Blake Loftis, 2 for 5 with 3 RBIs and 1 run scored, and Justin Fike, 2 for 4 with 3 RBIs and 1 runs scored, also came up big on offense.
